Diamonds have symbolized lasting commitment for generations. While natural diamonds remain timeless and authentic luxury, today’s couples have more choices than ever before; this includes man-made, lab-grown diamonds created using advanced technology.

At Shannon Jewelers in Spring, we help clients from Spring, The Woodlands, Klein, and across North Houston explore both natural and lab-grown diamonds so they can make a decision that best fits their style, values, and budget.

Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Real Diamonds?

Yes. Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds. They have the same physical, chemical, and optical properties as natural diamonds.
The difference lies in their origin, rarity and value.

Natural diamonds are rare, exquisite gemstones formed deep within the Earth over billions of years. Lab-grown diamonds are man-made and created in factories using advanced technology that replicates the natural diamond-forming process in a matter of weeks. There is no limit to the number of lab-grown diamonds that can be produced.

To the naked eye, lab-grown and natural diamonds look the same. Even experienced jewelers require specialized equipment to distinguish them.

Diamond with light reflections

Brilliance and Light Performance

Lab-grown diamonds deliver the same light performance as natural diamonds.

That includes:
•  Brilliance - the reflection of white light
• Fire - flashes of rainbow color
• Scintillation - the sparkle you see when the diamond moves

Whether you choose a classic round diamond or a distinctive fancy shape like oval or cushion, lab-grown diamonds are cut with the same precision as natural diamonds to maximize light performance.

Diamond grading

Updated Grading Standards

One key distinction in today’s market is how lab-grown diamonds are graded. As of 2025, the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) now provides lab-grown diamonds with simplified grading using broader quality classifications, such as “Premium” or “Standard”, rather than the full 4Cs reserved for natural diamonds. This is part of a broader industry shift to clearly separate the two product categories for consumers.

Don’t worry: these ratings still give you helpful guidance on quality. And when you shop with us at Shannon Jewelers in Spring, you’ll always receive full transparency, expert guidance, and certified documentation; regardless of which diamond type you choose.

How are Lab-Grown Diamonds Created?

Lab-grown diamonds are produced using two primary methods.

This method recreates the intense heat and pressure conditions found deep inside the Earth. Carbon atoms bond together around a small diamond seed, gradually forming a larger crystal.

Both methods create diamonds that are virtually identical to natural diamonds.

In this process, a diamond seed is placed inside a vacuum chamber filled with carbon-rich gas. When heated, carbon atoms separate and slowly build layer by layer onto the seed, forming a diamond crystal.

Both methods create diamonds that are virtually identical to natural diamonds.

Clarity and Inclusions

Like natural diamonds, lab-grown diamonds may contain internal characteristics known as inclusions. These can occur during the growth process and may include tiny metallic or structural features. In many cases, these inclusions are not visible to the naked eye. At Shannon Jewelers, we help you identify diamonds that appear eye-clean and show you how different stones compare under magnification and natural lighting.

One of the primary reasons couples consider lab-grown diamonds is cost.

Lab-Grown Diamond Pricing

Lab-grown diamonds typically cost 40–70% less than comparable natural diamonds with the same size and appearance.

This allows many couples to:
• Choose a larger center diamond
• Upgrade color or clarity
• Select a more intricate setting
• Stay comfortably within their budget

For many clients throughout Spring and The Woodlands, this flexibility makes lab-grown diamonds an appealing option.

Long-Term Value Considerations

While lab-grown diamonds offer attractive pricing, it’s important to understand the difference in long-term value. Because lab-grown diamonds can be produced in increasing quantities, they are not considered rare and currently have minimal resale value in the secondary market. Natural diamond supply, by contrast, remains finite and historically has retained stronger long-term value. At Shannon Jewelers, we discuss these differences openly so you can make an informed choice that works for you.

Ethical & Environmental Considerations

For some couples, lab-grown diamonds offer peace of mind regarding sourcing. Because they are created in controlled laboratory environments, they do not require mining. Many producers are also investing in renewable energy and more sustainable manufacturing practices. That said, lab creation still requires significant energy. If sustainability is important to you, we’re happy to discuss the sourcing and production practices behind different diamonds.
