What are the 4C’s? The Core of Every Diamond

When gemologists evaluate natural diamonds, they look at four primary characteristics known as the 4 C’s: Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat Weight. Each factor plays an important role in how a natural diamond looks and how it’s valued.

Cut

Cut is the single most important factor in how a diamond performs in light. It refers to the precision, proportions, symmetry, and polish of a diamond's facets, not its shape.

A well-cut diamond reflects light beautifully, creating the brightness, contrast, and flashes of color that make diamonds so captivating.

Even a large diamond can appear dull if it isn’t cut well. A properly cut diamond, on the other hand, will appear lively and full of light.

Color

Natural diamonds are graded on a scale from D (colorless) to Z (noticeable color).

Most people find diamonds in the near-colorless range (G–J) offer an excellent balance of beauty and value. When set in yellow or rose gold, many diamonds with a hint of warmth look especially beautiful.

The less color present in a diamond, the rarer and typically more valuable it becomes.

Clarity

Clarity refers to the tiny natural characteristics within a natural diamond, known as inclusions. These features were formed as the diamond crystal grew deep within the earth over billions of years and are each diamond’s unique “fingerprint”.

Clarity grades range from:

flawless

Flawless (FL)
No internal or external features visible under magnification.

internally flawless

Internally Flawless (IF)
No internal inclusions under 10x magnification.

very very slightly included

Very Very Slightly Included (VVS)
Extremely small inclusions difficult to detect under magnification.

very slightly included

Very Slightly Included (VS)
Minor inclusions visible under magnification.

slightly included

Slightly Included (SI)
Inclusions that may be visible under magnification but are often not noticeable to the naked eye.

Many diamonds in the VS or SI ranges offer excellent beauty and value, especially when the inclusions cannot be seen without magnification.

Carat Weight

Carat refers to a diamond’s weight, not necessarily its visible size.

Two diamonds with the same carat weight can look very different depending on their proportions and cut quality. Sometimes a slightly smaller diamond with an excellent cut will appear larger and more lively than a heavier stone that is cut poorly.

Natural Diamonds vs. Lab-Grown Diamonds

Today’s clients often ask about the difference between natural diamonds and lab-grown diamonds. Both are real diamonds with the same physical, chemical, and optical properties. The difference lies in how they are created and their rarity.

Natural Diamonds
Formed deep within the earth over billions of years and brought to the surface through natural geological processes. Rare and unique.

Lab-Grown Diamonds
Created in controlled laboratory environments that replicate the natural diamond growing process in a matter of weeks. Abundant and can be calibrated.

Here’s what you should know:

  • Lab-grown diamonds typically cost 40–70% less than comparable natural diamonds.
  • Natural diamonds often retain stronger long-term value and are preferred by many clients seeking heirloom-quality stones.
  • Both options are available in a wide range of shapes, sizes, and qualities.
  • At Shannon Jewelers, we carry both natural and lab-grown diamonds so you can compare them side by side and choose what feels right for you.

Why Certification Matters

All diamonds offered at Shannon Jewelers are graded by trusted independent laboratories such as:
• GIA (Gemological Institute of America)
• IGI (International Gemological Institute)

These laboratories provide unbiased reports detailing a natural diamond’s cut, color, clarity, and carat weight.

Certification helps ensure transparency and gives you confidence in exactly what you are purchasing. It also provides documentation for insurance and appraisals.

Finding the Right Diamond for You

There is no single “perfect” diamond. The right diamond is the one that fits your priorities, your style, and your budget.

Some clients prioritize size.
Others focus on clarity or color.
Many are looking for the best overall balance of beauty and value.

At Shannon Jewelers, we take the time to walk you through your options, explain the details clearly, and help you compare diamonds side by side.

Our goal isn’t to overwhelm you with technical language. It’s to help you feel confident in the choice you make.
